Fortnight Flicks – Week Three 2016

The new style for these posts will just be in order that I watched them, it’s so much easier to list them that way! I’m also adding the dates since we’re in the habit now of re-making every movie under the sun so there could be two or three of any movie out there at a time and I’d like to make finding them a little easier for you! I was thinking about including whether or not you can find them on Hulu or Netflix (we have both and no cable) but I don’t want to have to keep coming back to edit them when the status changes! I didn’t shut anything off this fortnight and I actually recommend at least trying every movie in this installment! Enjoy!

fortnight flicks

Cannonball Run (1981)

This reminded me a lot of Rat Race, which is supposed to be re-make of the old It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World but I admit that I haven’t seen the original yet. It’s a race with lots of funny shenanigans along the way. It’s funny but I feel like either comedy has changed or I just have a specific type of comedy I prefer because I didn’t find it laugh out loud hilarious. It was cute, not terrible. I haven’t had much experience with Dom DeLuise and Sammy Davis Jr. but they were fantastic, I’ll definitely be seeking out more of their movies because of this one!

True Story (2015) ★

This is a serious movie that stars Jonah Hill and James Franco. Yes, really! It really is a true story and it is about a murderer whose name I’m actually not going to use because, similarly to a comment made in an interview with James Franco, I don’t want to give the guy any more publicity. The man murdered his family and became close to a reporter during the trial process. Jonah Hill plays the reporter and Franco portrays the killer. I was shocked at how interested that I was in this movie that I’d never even heard of. It made me angry and sad. At the end, I was left feeling like so much more information was missing but I was glued to it the entire time. I think if you’re into mysteries, this would be one for you to check out.

Independence Day (1996) ★★★

Twenty years later, they’re making a sequel to this. That seems to be the way now, huh?! I’ve tried to watch this movie a million times and I know you guys aren’t going to agree with me but…I think it’s kind of boring. As far as movies with alien battles, I feel like there could have been so much more going on! There were parts that were really interesting, like the preserved aliens. Will Smith is usually the one I rely on for fun quips throughout a movie but even those don’t appear nearly as much in this flick. I know, it’s just me, right? At least I’m honest about it, knowing you may all think I’m crazy!

The Loft (2014) ★★★ 1/2

For some jerky reason, a bunch of married men decide to share an apartment used solely for extramarital affairs. Someone is found dead and now nobody knows who to trust. This is a pretty decent one that keeps you guessing!

The Last Witch Hunter (2015) ★★

Vin Diesel is, well, the last witch hunter. It’s relatively creepy, I think, and overall an okay movie. The plot was okay and it kept our interest. Plus, Elijah Wood is in it and I think he rules.

Ride Along 2 (2016) ★

You know, this one wasn’t nearly as funny as the original. Kevin Hart is still hilarious following Ice Cube around but he only screws up about half as much and the shenanigans just aren’t as wild as they head out of their jurisdiction to solve a crime right before Kevin Hart’s character is about to get married. I still enjoyed it though!

Deadpool (2016) ★

I decided on a five star system so this is all I can do! After seeing the trailers for this, it looked hilarious and I was dying to see it. I love Ryan Reynolds and his sarcasm and quick-wit which I think has got to be at least heavily improvised because it’s just something he’s good at. It’s completely vulgar with so much more profanity and blood than any other comic book movie so don’t watch this one with the kids. Basically, this is the story of how Wade Wilson becomes Deadpool and it’s so offensive and off-the-wall, it’s perfection. I’ve seen it thrice…so far!

Léon: The Professional (1994) ★★ 1/2

My husband came upon this movie while sifting through our Netflix. It’s incredibly old and stars Natalie Portman. She’s a young girl who loses her parents and takes up residence with a hitman. It’s full of action and also a little endearing!

Take This Waltz (2011) ★★★ 1/2

Someone shared a list of movies you should watch that will make you glad you’re single and this was on it. Intrigued because it looked pretty serious and that’s unlike most Seth Rogen movies, I checked it out. It’s got an independent film feel to it and I have no idea if it is, but it’s quiet, slow, and artistic. This is one of the few movies that I really wish I could spoil for you because I want to talk about it and the moral it leaves you with. Seth Rogen and Michelle Williams’s characters are very happily married and then a wrench is thrown into things. There isn’t much I can tell you but I rather enjoyed it!

Reign Over Me (2007)

Despite being a big fan of Adam Sandler, although I’ve expressed a dislike for many of his more recent movies, I had never heard of this one until it was referenced in something else. Adam Sandler’s character lost his family in 9/11 and Don Cheadle plays his college roommate who reconnects with him and helps to try and bring him back down to reality. It’s 100% not a comedy at all but it’s also extremely touching and emotional. I probably maybe possibly could have cried like at least once. I said maybe.

Grease Live! (2016) ★

It’s no surprise that I thought this was fabulous! Dare I say that it was maybe only a half a star short of the original? The singing was fab and the makeover on some of the characters was so fun! The character that stood out to me the most was actually Blanche played by Haneefah Wood. The original movie’s Blanche was supposed to be quirky but she was taken to a whole new level in Grease Live!, I was cracking up. The scenes seemed more modern and fun than the original. Also, even my mom, an avid Grease lover, did not notice that the original Frenchy played Vi at the diner! I thought that was unbelievably cool, she was my favorite in the first one.

Blended (2014) ★ 1/2

I always watch Sandler flicks, love or hate, but I forgot to catch this one when it first came out. He and Drew Barrymore link up again to play a single mom and dad who go on a terrible date with each other and end up on vacation together, trying to make the best of it. It had the usual rom-com moments and it was cute-funny.

  1. OMG I saw cannonball run in the drive-in when I was a teen …. back then that was a great movie (not so much these days lol)
Independence Day I’d give a 4 star rating as its classic, humor and sci fi, and the Last witch hunter I’d also give a 4 star rating …. but thats me personally and I don’t do romance stuff, and I seldom do comedies.

    1. I tend to hate romantic movies, I usually only watch them by mistake or if there is so much hype that I’m curious! No comedies?! I love comedies, they may be my favorite!!
