Start Playing Around On A Lenovo Ideapad Y900!

quirky review disc

I’ve always enjoyed playing video games. I remember the first time I booted up my old Atari system. I graduated onto each and every console up until computers really started to catch on, and after that, I was hooked. It didn’t matter that the games I played, like Gemstone III, were text based MUDs with absolutely NO graphics whatsoever.  Many people today don’t see the appeal of text rolling across the screen, but I swear, it’s hard to beat the power of one’s own imagination.  Add the fact that I was able to play with other people in real time, and it was phenomenal.  It wasn’t something I was about to give up when I joined the military.

The military presented its own challenges.  I had two computers.  One was a laptop, and one was a desktop.  My desktop was a beast and it was capable of anything I needed it to be… for a time.  Handling games like Dark Age of Camelot, and World of Warcraft, was no problem.  It was extremely bulky, and it didn’t help me when I got deployed.  That’s where the laptop came in, but the laptop couldn’t handle the games.  I took it, and continued playing the text based time sinks, but it wasn’t the same.  I learned early that keeping up with technology was going to become expensive.  It seemed like every game that hit the market completely invalidated whatever I had at my house, and I was forced to fall behind the gaming curve, or upgrade.  I had to make a choice.  I could either continue upgrading my desktop system, or I could try to find laptops that could handle the workload.  Each time I left home, the decision to move to laptops became easier until I finally gave up on the desktop system all together.

I’ve been out of the military now for 10+ years, and I haven’t gone back to desktop systems.  I know the pros, and the cons, of owning each.  Having five children also means it’s tough to come up with the money to keep up with the technology of today.  Instead of hunting down the latest and greatest processor I could find, I was looking for games that would work on my system.  My best friend, Snuffy (I don’t think his mother actually named him that) would often remark on how limited we were in the selection.  We wanted to play together, but it was rough, playing the same things day in and day out. He would make a suggestion, and I’d go out and purchase the game.  To my dismay, I would find that the game would move at a snail’s pace, and the lag would get me killed.  The games would be unplayable, and the hunt would continue.  Then I got my hands on the Lenovo Ideapad Y900, and it was as if the world changed.

Many doors opened with the Lenovo Ideapad Y900.  I mean that in the literal sense, because I could play all the games that had been giving me grief.  Mortal Online, Tiger Knight: Empire War, and even The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt all ran seamlessly.  The 16GB of DDR4 memory and the Intel Core I7 processor handled them like a champ.  There wasn’t a moment of frame delay to be seen, and the sound was amazing.  The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M is an older chip, for sure, but I’m not disappointed in the slightest.  All the images, both in game and out, were crisp and clean.  Having everything on a 17.3″ leaves me feeling like I’m watching it on a television screen.

So it obviously holds up under the hood, but how is it for functionality?  Below the keyboard is a rubberized mat.  It makes for a good grip to help keep your fingers in place, but the keys have a nice little feature.  There are little bumps on the ‘f’ and ‘j’ keys, like every other keyboard, however, there is also one on the ‘w’ key.  Since the ‘w,’ ‘a,’ ‘s,’ and ‘d’ tend to be movement keys, it’s nice to have a way to find them without taking your eyes off the screen.  For those who WOULD look down at their fingers, the Lenovo Ideapad Y900 has some other nifty little features.  For example, it comes with red key tabs to go over those movement keys, and you can also set up different light profiles for the key themselves.  Yes, you heard me.

You can split up your keyboard into seven different sections, each with a different light color.  That would come in handy if you needed to devote different types of actions to different colors.  There are also several different macro key options, and a turbo toggle switch should the need arise.

Now should you prefer an actual mouse over the touch pad, there are plenty of ports available.  There are two USB 2.0’s, one USB  3.0, one USB 3.1, and it also has a USB-C connector!  There’s also an HDMI output connector, and a DisplayPort Connector in case you’d like to use something other than the 17.3″ screen.  The Ethernet connector allows connection to the outside world, but I’ve always been a fan of Wireless.  The Killer Network Adapter kept me moving without hiccups, and the Bluetooth 4.1 rounds out the options.  The Lenovo Ideapad Y900 doesn’t leave you hanging.

I’ve used a lot of laptops that lacked several of the ports this puppy has, and I figured heat would be an issue.  The Lenovo Ideapad Y900 solves that with an intricate intake system underneath, and exhausts through the rear.  It’s a brilliant design!  With so much going on, and its size, it makes sense that it’s heavy and hard to pack up, but that’s easily solved as well.  Every laptop I’ve ever bought, I’ve purchased a bag that was perfect for it.  So if you’re going to travel, you can shoulder the load with a little bit of planning, and that definitely makes it worth it.

The Lenovo Ideapad Y900 is solid, all around.  It has a metallic finish, and it LOOKS GOOD.  In fact, when I took it out of the package, my wife called it “sexy.”  It’s what gamers want.  It can handle the load, has plenty of options, it’s portable, and it looks great doing it.  The search is over… I found the ‘one.’
