Keep Them Learning at Home with Boys Town Press Children’s Books + GIVEAWAY! Ends 9/26

quirky review disc

It seems like we were the last to start school but it has finally begun! We catch three buses to three different schools and then the little man and little woman are home with me. Little Man is four now and will begin kindergarten next year but I’m enjoying homeschooling preschool with him. The entire lesson plan is written out for each day with a schedule I try to adhere to. We’ve got worksheets, educational interactive play, white boards to practice letters, and one of his favorites… reading time! To keep things interesting, I like to find fun and original stories to read with him and I feel like Boys Town Press has tons of books that are just right for us.

The Technology Tail by Julia Cook is written for kids in grades one through six and cleverly talks about the importance of what your child puts online. The story uses rhyming and a metaphor of the “technology tail” to describe how it works when you post things online and also how it affects other people. As my fourth grader begins to use the computer at school and friends share their tablets with her, I think this is an important lesson to teach her and other children her age. It’s really an adorable and smart way to explain such a serious concept to young kids!

Lou Knows What to Do: Supermarket by Kimberly Tice and Venita Livack is the first in a series of social stories that display how to be comfortable in situations that may be challenging. It’s particularly an excellent series for children with autism or even anxiety. Lou Knows What to Do: Supermarket follows Lou as he goes through the motions of shopping at the grocery store and what he should and shouldn’t do.

Hey Goose! What’s Your Excuse? By Lisa Griffin is so cute and was enjoyed by all of my little ones. It’s about a goose named Boone who is afraid to cross the pond but ultimately decides to do it and good things happen! This book is perfect for teaching children not to be afraid to step out of their comfort zones and try new things!

Freddie the Fly: Motormouth by Kimberly Delude is fun to read, particularly as fast as you can to give the full effect. You see, Freddie the Fly talks a lot and learns about how to listen to others and let them have a chance to talk. Freddie learns all kinds of new things about his friends and family because he starts being patient and attentive to their stories. All of the kids love this one the most, even my fourth grader!

What I like about all of these Boys Town Press children’s books is that there is an informative page at the end about applying the story for parents and teachers. It goes through the parts of the book that can be directly applied to their lives, such as being patient or doing something safely. I feel like this is the ultimate sign of a book that intends to educate the readers and their caregivers and it’s really reassuring.
