The Quirky Mom Next Door PICKS: Fall TV

Fall is coming and if you’re anything like me, that means snuggling up by the fire (it’s an imaginary fire for me…) with your significant other and watching your favorite shows after the kids go to bed. Bonding over our shows is one of the ways that me and Hubs ensure we’re spending time together, even if it’s not the most socially interactive. We’ll be close and usually he’s rubbing my feet or my head is on his chest. I think it’s a fun way to be able to relax! Anyway, some of my shows are returning for the fall and I wanted to share them with you in case you’re looking for something to watch!

The Mindy Project
Hulu
The Final Season premieres Tuesday, September 12

I didn’t start getting into this show until it was going off of cable television and then I was disappointed that it was gone! I realized they were playing it on Hulu but now it’s the last season and I’m disappointed all over again! Mindy Kaling is beautiful, pretty funny, and very sarcastic. She plays a single and somewhat high maintenance gynecologist. I think the comedy is decent!

The Good Place
NBC
Special 1-hour Season 2 premiere Wednesday, September 20 at 10pm, returning Thursdays at 8:30pm

The Good Place is my absolute favorite show on television right now. It is so unbelievably adorable and ORIGINAL! Kristen Bell’s character arrives in The Good Place and immediately realizes that she’s not meant to be there because she was a terrible person on Earth (Is it just me or is it impossible to imagine Kristen Bell being a terrible person?). She hilariously tries to figure out what to do with the help of other characters and so many weird things happen as The Good Place starts to go crazy. I can’t say too much more or I’ll give it away but you’ve only missed the first season and it’s available on Netflix so go catch up!

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
ABC
Wednesday, September 20, at 10:00PM

This is the only Marvel movie spin-off I’ve watched and I think it’s decent! Some seasons are better than others but I love how it always ties into the most recent movie. The show revolves around the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and some of the inhumans it’s connected to. If you’re into the comic book stuff, I think this is at least worth trying!

This Is Us
NBC
Tuesday, September 26, at 9:00PM

I don’t think it’s possible that you haven’t heard of this one yet! This show is a drama about the lives of these triplets who are now adults. Mandy Moore plays their mom and luckily for us, does several scenes where she’s singing. I think she has one of the most beautiful singing voices I’ve ever heard so I’m always happy to hear her sing. Now, if you watch this show you have to be prepared to cry. I am not usually into any show that makes me cry but this show just pulls you in.

Speechless
ABC
Wednesday, September 27, at 8:30PM

Speechless is a somewhat new comedy that follows a teen with cerebral palsy and his family. My best friend has cerebral palsy so I’m happy to see any show or celebrity shed the light on what struggles he might go through and also what he goes through that’s just like any other person. A friend of mine with a young child who had CP says that the mom on Speechless is pretty much exactly like her! I should mention that the mom is played by Minnie Driver, who is absolutely hilarious, assertive, and gorgeous. Actually, the entire cast has a lot of great chemistry and as much as I feel like comedies are short-lived, I’m pulling for this show to thrive for a long time because I really enjoy it!

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
NBC
Wednesday, September 27, at 9:00PM

This has been on for nearly forever so if you’re going to watch it, you already do. I’m basically just letting you know when it returns. In case you have been asleep for the last 18 years, the show is a fictional drama about special victims abuse cases in the New York Police Department.

Grey’s Anatomy
ABC
Thursday, September 28, at 8:00PM

There seem to be two categories of Grey’s viewers. Either you’ve been watching it since the beginning or at one point, you binge-watched it. I am one of the binge people who caught it around season 10. It’s basically an evening soap opera about doctors, particularly a doctor named Meredith Grey. I don’t tend to like soap operas but somewhere along the line, I got sucked in and couldn’t look away, even when people came back from the dead in typical soap opera fashion.

Superstore
NBC
Thursday, September 28, at 8:00PM

It will obvious to you pretty quickly what “super store” this is supposed to be and this show is about the people who work there and have to deal with each other plus all of the crazy customers and situations that happen. It’s supposed to be fiction but hey, I bet most of this stuff has actually happened in this super store at some point. Superstore is pretty funny and America Ferrera is really good as the main character but all of the characters are really memorable.

Marvel’s Inhumans
ABC
Premieres Friday, September 29, at 9:00PM

Inhumans is brand new and to describe it directly from Wikipedia: “After a military coup, the Inhuman Royal Family escape to Hawaii where they must save themselves and the world.” I think the inhumans are the most interesting part of S.H.I.E.L.D. so it’s worth trying, especially if you enjoy that show.

Shark Tank
ABC
Sunday, October 1, at 8:00PM

I watch Shark Tank when I’m working because it really gets me feeling motivated and creative! People go on and pitch their companies to a board of investors in hopes to get help really taking the company off of the ground. A lot of the ideas are extremely unique, many are useful, and some are just hilarious. I remember the first episode I ever watched had a guy with a clock that would cook bacon for you to wake you up in the morning. Obviously, that idea was a funny dud.

Last Man On Earth
FOX
Season 4 premieres Sunday, October 1 at 9:30PM

I’ve actually written about this show before and I’m still watching! I honestly didn’t expect to like it so much but Will Forte is apparently really funny and now that Kristen Schaal is a regular character, I enjoy watching what they do together. They’re both such ridiculous people that it’s funny. Also, it’s not just a comedy. They actually leave you on some fairly decent cliffhangers that make you want to watch again. I can’t think of very many comedies that have ever left me with that cliffhanger feeling afterward!

Scandal
ABC
Thursday, October 5 at 9:00PM

My husband and I both love this show. He’s really into politics and even though I think the politics are more of an undertone, I bet that a lot of the scandal incidents, or variations of them, have really happened. Either way, it is really suspenseful and smart. We’re always eager to see the next episode and they do a decent job keeping you on your toes. Oh, to be specific, the show is about a political “fixer” named Olivia Pope but the character is based on a real person who is like an advisor to politicians. She gets them out of messes that they’ve gotten themselves into using all kinds of genius tactics.

Supernatural
The CW
Thursday, October 12, at 8:00PM

I have a love/hate relationship with Supernatural sometimes. The show as a whole is fantastic, interesting, fun, and has enough funny thrown in there. Some seasons are abhorrent, while some are amazing. From what I heard, they tried to end it a few times but then changed their minds and I feel like sometimes that’s evident. There are a few awesome seasons that could have been perfect show finales. If you’re looking for a show with a lot of seasons to catch up on, watch it. It’s a fictional story about two brothers who are ghost hunters, although it certainly doesn’t stop with ghosts. They interact with all kinds of creatures you may have read about in folklore. Most of the time, I’m really glad I started watching it.

The Walking Dead
AMC
Celebrates its 100th episode on Sunday, October 22nd at 9:00PM

At this point, I think you’re either on the “No thanks, zombies aren’t for me” side or you’re a fan. Nobody hasn’t heard of it, right? I really didn’t expect to like it when we first turned it on. The majority of zombie movies feel like they’ve gone on too long so I thought that there was no way in the world that a zombie television show would last and not bore me. I was wrong. They have all types of crazy apocalypse scenarios and interactions. Similarly to Game of Thrones, they kill off your favorite characters left and right. It has its moments of being really violent and gory but I think it could be a lot worse. My mom is pretty squeamish and this is her favorite show. The writing is pretty good and they’ve managed to keep it not only alive for this long, but still just as good as the first time I turned it on.

Stranger Things
Netflix
Friday, October 27th

I would say that Stranger Things is the first of its kind in this generation. It’s a science fiction story that keeps you hooked but it also makes you feel like you’re watching something from the 80s or 90s. I feel like if I describe the premise, it won’t really do the show justice because it sounds so odd and it’s really just one of those things you have to watch to decide if it’s for you. It’s not gory, it’s a little eerie, and well, strange. It’s a Netflix original so it’s at your fingertips for your own convenience. ¡ʇoɥs ɐ ʇı ǝʌıƃ

  1. Love these! I adore ‘This is Us’ and ‘Stranger Things’! One of my favorite things at the end of each day is watching a show with my husband after we get the kids in bed. I’ll look into some of your other suggestions for Fall TV!

  2. I pretty much never watch TV when it’s actually scheduled…I just watch Netflix or Amazon Prime. I’ve heard really good things about Stranger Things, but I’m pretty sure it would give me nightmares, so I’ve steered clear. 🙂

  3. I can’t wait for This Is Us to come back! I love that show. And I had forgotten about Speechless! That show is so funny. Thanks for the reminder to double check our DVR. And for things to look forward to as my summer shows end!

  4. I can’t wait for Stranger Things, This is Us, The Walking Dead, and Grey’s & Scandal. I’m also really excited about the Will and Grace reboot. Hope it lives up to the hype!
