ButcherBox Slaughters the Competition When It Comes to Meat!

There are a lot of sayings out there, and one that has always rung true for me is that a way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.  Men, and women, like good food, but I don’t see women get as excited about a nice juicy steak as a man will.  We take it to new heights.  We come up with intricate ways to prepare the proteins before they hit the grill.  We rub our hands over them, we douse them in marinades, we beat the heck out of them.  We want them to be perfect.  Now recently, I got the luxury to try out ButcherBox.  They are basically a mail order meat company that ships the finest of organic meats to your doorstep.

Like many, I had my reservations.  First off, what was the difference between store bought and organic?  What exactly did it mean?  In short, the stuff that gets fed to chickens and cows in many places could kill you.  Yes, you read that correctly.  Mad Cow Disease is just one of the possible risks you run when you don’t know where your beef comes from.  They literally scoop chicken poop up off the floor, and feed it to cows.  It’s disgusting, and I really don’t feel the need to paint a picture for that one, but it really doesn’t stop there.  They also pump all kinds of antibiotics into the animals, and pump them with so many different chemicals to make them grow ‘fatter.’  Those antibiotics get absorbed into the meat and could wreak havoc in your system later in life as you absorb them yourself.

They also add in dyes to give meats their color.  If it’s not pink, it’s not fresh, right?  Wrong.  Let me tell you something about dyes, they’re bad in their own right.  I’m proud to say we’re a Red Dye 40 free home.  Once upon a time my children were driving me up the wall.  Okay, that still happens, but I mean they were far worse!  They were running around the house like an energized bunny, hooting and hollering, and it was extremely hectic.  I started looking at their diets.  I looked at their snacks, their cereals, their drinks, and so on.  I realized that a good many of them had something in common, and it all surrounded color.   After a little bit of research, I decided to cut it out from the house diet.  As time went by I noticed a marked improvement in their behaviors.   They normalized!   I kid you not, I can tell when they’ve had a little bit of it, so I know this concept of diet isn’t hogwash.

Another issue I had involved freshness.  I was worried that the meat would spoil.  I always worry about that when anything comes via a shipping company or through the mail.  Thankfully, ButcherBox takes care of that fear.  They pack everything in dry ice, and everything will arrive frozen solid.  We had ours delivered in warmer weather, and I have say I was quite impressed with how well their packaging held up.

Inside the box I found chicken breasts, a pork tenderloin, two pounds of fresh ground beef, two flank steaks, and two sirloins.  I was anxious to try this stuff out!  I immediately started planning out the meals!  Thankfully I love cooking, so I already knew how to truly test the meats, but if I didn’t they included a recipe for the sirloins.  Trust me when I say, I can never have too many recipes.

The first thing I decided to test was the chicken breasts.  I decided to go with my Chicken Cordon Bleu.  The reason I chose that was because it would run the meats through a wide range of tests.  For example, one of the big differences I noticed was simply in the feel of it.  The chicken felt fresh!  I can’t help but wonder if that’s the difference between the actual free-range chickens ButcherBox selects versus its competitors.  It was flexible, and easy to butterfly.  It wasn’t taut like store bought chicken breasts.  My knife slid through it easily, and the whole dinner came out beautifully!

Next up on the docket was the ground beef.  I figured the best move on this one was to double the amount of the meat.  I went out and grabbed the same amount of beef, like for like.  I made sure the fat percentage matched, and then I got cracking!  I opted for cheeseburgers.  ButcherBox ensures the cows are grass-fed, as nature intended them to be, and trust me when I say you’ll notice the difference!  They didn’t disappoint.  My kids ate every last little morsel!

I put the sirloins and flank steaks through similar tests.  Each time I cooked one, I purchased a similar store item, and prepared them all at the same time.  That ensured the same potential flavors, whether it was from a rub or a marinade.  I even made sure to fire the steaks up on the same heats on the grill.  I wasn’t surprised by the results.  My kids ate every little piece of the ButcherBox beefs, and left me the store bought.  Impressive.

So ButcherBox gets high marks in the chicken, and in the beef departments, but how would they fare in the pork arena?  All I can say is the tenderloin was second to none.  I didn’t run the same test as i had with the beef.  By then Butcherbox had earned my trust.  The meat was perfectly fresh.  It didn’t have a lot, if any, fat on it, and I decided I would get my kids back on this one.  I made them pasta.  I wanted to keep the tenderloin all to myself!

If you’re having trouble finding a gift for a guy, I have to recommend ButcherBox.  It’s definitely a win in my book, and he’ll definitely appreciate it!

  1. Wow this looks like something that would be perfect for my husband and I. It’s just the two of us now and it’s hard to find good quality meat where I live and small packages we dont need 8 pork chops or 8 chicken breast. Thanks for the info gonna look into this

  2. I haven’t been able to eat beef or pork for the last 20+ years. I wonder if it’s because of the “additives” that they are putting into the meat. I’m really tired of eating chicken. I eat seafood whenever I can but my husband and son won’t touch it. So, when we go out, they eat beef and pork and I eat seafood. I wish I could eat a nice steak again. I’m going to look into Butcher Block.

  3. I always wondered about shipped food. I can see yours arrived in good shape and nothing wrong with it. And grass fed, good meat. Thanks for review.

  4. i love the smaller portions its good for the times when its just me which is every monday or the nights where the kids would rather have something else but i still am craving something !

  5. Oh my gosh, I love Butcher Box! I started with them during their Kickstarter and have never been disappointed! I love that each month is meat from a different farm so it supports all over the US!

  6. Great review! I am pretty picky when it comes to buying the meat we eat. The biggest put off for me is the smell. I bought some hamburger one time that I never bought before, and that was a mistake. I swear by the meat locker I buy my meats from, but when money is tight sometimes it’s hard to get good quality meat. I am very interested in giving ButcherBox a try. I have been curious about meat delivery like this so I guess I will find out! Thanks so much for sharing!

  7. Nothing pleases my husband like a really good burger. He won’t even eat a fast food one, and I don’t blame him. He wants the real deal, but decent beef is harder and harder to find.

  8. I don’t buy my meat at the supermarket. This is great if you aren’t close to a farm. We all pitch is when a cow is ready and split the meat. I go to another farm for my pork and chicken. Always organic feed and roams the farm.

  9. Their meat sounds wonderful. We buy are meat from a local person who raises cows. So we know what pretty much goes into to the cow. It would be fun to test his meat to ButcherBox products to see how they compare.

  10. I’m so glad you were able to narrow down the ingredient that was affecting your children like that! I’d love to try one of these types of services but it seems like such a luxury.

  11. I live in an area where you can’t really find a good place to buy quality meat. We have no butcher and I love to cook everything and anything. I will have to look into this for my family. I am really big on casseroles so it would go quite a way. Thank you for sharing.

  12. This sounds like a wonderful idea. I have been looking for a place to get good meat. I will be checking this out soon. Thank you so much for sharing

  13. We actually have a little grocer store that is extremely expensive but their meats are out of this world good, I wont buy it elsewhere but I am very interested in Butcherbox, I’m gonna see how much see if its doable but if its as good as you say I would definitely purchase it every month! Thank You!

  14. Wow this looks so good! Do they package for a specific number of people eating? We are a family of 3 and quite often we are left throwing away good food because we had to cook too much.

  15. Those look really delicious! I’ve been seeing Butcherbox everywhere lately, but haven’t tried it out yet. Going to need to try it out though.

  16. This definitely sounds like an amazing service! I know that my family would love to receive a box of fresh meat delivered right to our doors. 🙂 It would make a great gift as well!
