The First Step in My LASIK Journey with EyeCare 20/20!

lasik disclosure

Are you tired of looking through dirty glasses? Trying to figure out what you did with your contact case every night? Maybe the idea of LASIK has crossed your mind but something is holding you back. Perhaps following along with my journey will help you take the first step: getting your own LASIK consultation!

My consultation was an absolute breeze! EyeCare 20/20‘s sweet schedulers helped coordinate a good time for me to come in. They were very patient with me while I replied with things like “Ooh, we have piano lessions at that time” or “I wonder if I can make it after I put the kids on the bus” until we found the right appointment time for the busy mom of five!

I pulled up to a brick building with a nearly full parking lot and a big EyeCare 20/20 sign on top – they were busy! After filling out typical patient forms, I waited just a few minutes to be seen. I could tell that they were fairly prompt with their appointment times because the waiting room wasn’t packed. That’s always a relief!

What commenced seemed to me like a very typical eye exam. My eye pressure was tested with a puff of air. I was asked to read letters on a chart and watch a picture of a road going in and out of focus. There were a few different lights that I had to focus on. At one point, there was a spinning spiral like the kind you see in a funhouse or when they’re hypnotizing someone in a cartoon. Can you imagine? “You WILL be able to see now. Okay, your LASIK is over.” (It’s almost that quick, but we’ll get to that!)

Then, I had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Cary Silverman. I was able to ask my notebook full of questions like “Could I go blind?” Immediately he told me that was not a possibility. Oh! I know most of us are afraid of that, right?

I was happy that I asked, “Does it hurt?” Not only because this is a typical concern for many, but also because I was able to see Dr. Silverman’s fun personality in his answer, “I won’t feel a thing”. Ha! Of course, then he told me that no, it wouldn’t hurt me either. He explained that there will be a feeling of pressure but because numbing eye drops are used, you won’t be in pain!

We spoke for a while, during which he explained to me that he has done LASIK surgery thousands of times in his many years and has been an ophthalmologist for even longer. He’s highly regarded in his field and EyeCare 20/20 is a regional eye care center, serving all of New Jersey and some New Yorkers too.

After Dr. Silverman looked over my exam, checked a couple more things, and dilated my eyes, he informed me right then and there that I was a candidate! How relieved I was that I wouldn’t have to wait for testing to be sent to some facility, determined by a different set of people, and then receive a phone call with the news. I was excited to start mentally preparing for the fact that my entire life was about to change!

Then, I was led to a room watch a short informational video about my upcoming procedure! I took a picture to document this exciting point in my journey – finding out that I was going to be getting LASIK! After that, there were a few more quick tests and I was able to sit down and schedule a good date for my procedure. It was nice to know that the procedure could be done on a Friday so that the first follow-up could be done on a Saturday, fitting quite nicely into our schedule! Once we were scheduled, I was on my way! All in all, I think I was at the appointment for maybe 45 minutes.

For some reason, the dilating drops caused my eyesight to be blurry for a while so I sat in my car until they wore off, calling my close friends and family to tell them about my awesome news! Just a couple of weeks later, I would return to EyeCare 20/20 to receive the gift of eyesight! WOW! Keep following my LASIK series if you’d like to hear how it turned out for me!

  1. I have a friend who had terrible eyesight and had this done. He now has perfect vision and doesn’t need his glasses anymore. He said it was money well spent.

  2. I have been wanting to do this so much. I’m not even scared of ir, so that’s not it. I can’t really say what’s stopping me. Your story helps though. Gosh, my glasses are a big pain!

  3. I have always wondered what it would be like to have lasik done. Yes my first question would be can I go blind. So you definitely answered that for me. It sounds so simple and some day some how, I am going to have it done or at least see if I qualify….

  4. I have always been leary of lasik eye surgery. Anything with my eyes and I am very reserved. I do know people who have had it done and are very pleased with the results, but again it really scares me.

  5. I’m glad I read this. I had so many questions about Lasik, but I never ask when I go to the eye doctor. I have worn glasses since I was a kid, and I’m seriously considering it. Next time I go I’ll ask if we can see if I’m a a candidate. This is exciting!

  6. I’ve had glasses since 4th grade, completely blind without my contacts or glasses just about. I’ve been seriously considering lasik but then in a few years when my eyes go the other way, it will be messed up again. I should have done it 5 years ago.

  7. I really appreciate this article. I have been thinking about doing this for a while. I will have to check this out. Thank you so much for sharing

  8. I had perfect vision then in the last year all of a sudden I cant read a Tylenol bottle. I bought a dozen pairs of those drugstore glasses but they give me a headache so I know they aren’t the right strength. I strained my eyes reading emails on my phone I believe. I wonder if this would help me? I’m gonna check it out ! Thank You!

  9. My eyes have got bad just this past year. The drugstore glasses give me a headache. I’m gonna see if this would help me. Thank You!!

  10. I really wish that this was an option for me. I wish there was corrective surgery for people who meed readers. I hate that I am wearing progressive lenses and still struggling to see!

  11. Congratulations! I have known people who have gotten this procedure done with no problems at all, and the gift of eyesight is an amazing thing! 🙂 I am sure it will be such a relief to not have to worry about glasses anymore.
