DIY Holiday Card Tree

Every year I intend to make a holiday card holder but I never get around to it. This year, a friend of mine came by and showed me a picture of a neat idea that looked so simple and customizable, I had to try it out. I’m glad that I did, I think it came out really cute and it’s a really easy one to change up and improve upon. Let me share with you the basics of the way I did it…

You will need:

Three pieces of long, thin wood (we got ours in white, sold as trim in a home improvement store)

Nails & hammer

Hot glue

Ribbon

Clothespins

Paint/markers

Here’s what I did:

So I shaped the three pieces of wood into a long triangle and hammered the nails to keep them in place. I’m a little new to the woodworking stuff so I actually hammered the nails into the floor a little bit. Don’t do what I did. Use a workbench or something. I don’t have one of those, I tried to use other wood to block it and the long nail went through all of it. Tee-hee.

Then I turned it to the “wrong side”, and glued ribbon across onto an angle in the way I desired it to look. I decided to alternate colors between a thin silvery ribbon and a dark green one, since I knew that I would be putting red clothespins on later.

After I got all of my zig-zagged ribbons up, I was almost finished. I took regular clothespins and colored them with a red marker. I had paint but I just wanted to try to make as minimal mess as possible (I still ended up covered in marker!). I love the way it came out!

Other things you could do:

Use vinyl or wood to create word accents to go around it. Silver “Joy” and “Peace” would look so nice surrounding it.

Change up the colors, Do a green tree with decorative ribbons across.

Glitter, everywhere, on any part of it. The tree, the ribbon, the clothespins, etc.

Add a star, with wood or wire. I thought about adding a star but I wanted to go basic this year.

If you notice, it’s also a great place for your Elf on the Shelf to rest too! 🙂
