When I first decided to teach my children at home, I wanted some sort of a classroom layout. I thought if I could create a separate area for learning, the focus would be better. My children were so thrilled to see what I came up with!
I was able to find a regular old beat-up school desk at a thrift store for just $5. It was scraped and covered in stickers but I knew how to make it look beautiful and new.
I painted the top with purple chalkboard paint. I used glue, Mod Podge would probably be great for this, to stick fabric to the outside edges of the desk, covering all of the stickers and cuts. All of the small ridged edges in between looked drab in between these new fancy changes, so I used a basic acrylic paint to color them blue.
The inside of the desk was a mess too. With the outsides now looking so pretty, I couldn’t just leave it like that! I used more glue to line the inside and inner edges with felt.
Now, my children could draw or do scratch work on their desks without wasting extra paper and it looked so fresh and adorable!
The girls just loved their new fancy desk and it probably cost me about a total of $10 or less, because the fabric had been on sale for less than a dollar for a closeout!
I bought an old desk similar to this at a yard sale last summer. I have been trying to find a good idea for how to fix it up and I think this is it. Thanks for the inspiration!
This is such a great idea! It looks great too!
This is such a good idea. It allows kids to draw and write and have a “creative space”. Even if you don’t homeschool its a great idea!
That turned out so nice. A really good idea. I have an old desk with the chair attached I should do that to.
