We love to read in this household! I’ve been obsessed with Harry Potter since I was a child and we’ve read to the children since they were babies. Now that my oldest can read and my middle daughter is getting there, it’s becoming even more fun to read stories together. Everybody has their favorites, myself included. When I read a description of Henry’s Big Star Adventure, I was really intrigued by the comparison to Roald Dahl, Alice in Wonderland, and The Wizard of Oz because they’re some of my favorites.
One quick peek at the illustrations in Henry’s Big Star Adventure and I definitely got a really cool Roald Dahl vibe so I was pretty excited to check it out. It’s got small chapters in it and is recommended for ages 6-10, depending on their reading level, but all of the kids enjoyed listening to the story. Henry’s Big Star Adventure is about a boy who learns that our hearts are full of stars and there are certain actions that can cause you to lose them. He learns this upon one day losing one of his own when it pops out of his mouth and floats away! Henry then sets off on an adventure, determined to get his stars back.
From a parent’s perspective, I love this story because the imaginative journey it brings you on is so absolutely awesome. The detail is perfect and really puts the vivid imagery into your mind and that of your child’s. The funny moments were the best of all because the kids let out these huge laughs that showed me that they were attentive to every word I read, anxious to hear what would happen next. I could absolutely see this book being turned into a movie that entertains the whole family and I would be all for it! I hope it becomes one of the classics of this generation, I really do.
My kids had a lot of fun listening to the adventure and I thought it would be even more entertaining to have them illustrate the story themselves! My seven year old said, “I drew a zorkalork who is angry, Henry on his banana leaf, and when a star came out of his mouth. On the back, those are the bugs that are chasing him and the girl and they are talking about how they got here.”
My five year old told me, “I drew the banana leaf falling in the water. It’s nighttime. I drew the river and some of the grass. The star came out of Henry’s mouth and here’s the zorkalork and the sign he saw before he saw the girl.”
Henry’s Big Star Adventure is at an ideal reading level for the children who are just beginning to venture into novels. It includes a moderate amount of words but also introduces a lot of good vocabulary words. I think that this is the kind of book that could really get a child hooked on reading. I hope to see more from the author, Scott Schumaker, and I would definitely add every piece of his work to our collection. This seems like just the beginning in a series of adventures into the imagination that everyone should read, and I don’t say that lightly because I’m pretty serious about books!
