Coloring is such a calming and simple form of expression and relaxation. I feel like I can free my mind and just let everything flow onto the paper. For my births, I like to focus on visualizations of nature, breathing methods, calming music, and just an overall meditative feeling. This pregnancy, my mind has been all over the place and I thought it would be important to incorporate birth affirmations. It was suggested by my care providers that I meditate and spend time focusing on being positive with my baby. Never had I considered that coloring was a way to get me exactly the zen I needed.
Previews of Bringing Baby Earthside: A Birth Affirmations Coloring Book told me that this was exactly what I needed, especially this time around. When I received my book, I was overwhelmed with this optimistic and excited feeling just flipping through the pages. Each picture is so beautiful and so closely represented how I see and feel during labor. The affirmations are strong and incredibly empowering. I think my favorite affirmation would be “I can do anything for 60 seconds,” while my favorite page would be that of the mother and father embracing while they enjoy their precious blessing. The moments of that powerful bond I feel with my husband are so emotional and positive for me to look back on and ahead to.
These amazing coloring pages are so intricate and detailed, I feel so mellow as I sit and choose color after color to make the image vibrant, thinking of nothing but bringing my darling child into the world. The pages are relatively thick so you can use any medium that interests you! You can use colored pencils, crayons, markers, watercolor paint, pastels, or get even more creative with it! I love seeing when The Art of Birth shares images of what other expecting mothers have done with the pages, it makes me feel connected to them and imagine how they might be feeling.
I truly can’t decide whether or not I should tear out the pages of this soothing coloring book to hang them all around my birth space and keep me going, or if I want to store Bringing Baby Earthside away and save it as a keepsake for this baby to see one day. “These, these are what I created, what I imagined, as I prepared to welcome you to the world.”
Knowing that coloring is a pacifying activity, even for adults, The Art of Birth is working on another meaningful coloring book for mothers. Nourishing Baby will feature amazing, intimate pages of mothers breastfeeding their babies. This is another part of being a mother that I find just so absolutely beautiful and I’m really looking forward to checking out Nourishing Baby when it comes out!
