Earlier this month, my sweet little girl was born. It usually takes a bit of time for my milk to come in so I make sure that I do a lot of skin-to-skin contact to encourage milk production. They say that the feel and scent of your baby on your body helps to send the messages to your body to make milk. When I discovered SleepBelt, I thought about what a great way to snuggle my little one and do our skin-to-skin.

I like the description of SleepBelt on their website that calls it a “unique hybrid between swaddling and babywearing”, it’s really accurate! The SleepBelt holds your baby snugly, similarly to how a swaddle does, and it secures them to you, just like when you wear your baby.

One of the perks of the SleepBelt is how simple it is. There’s too much going on in my life, I’m a fan of simple. I don’t have time to figure out straps, buckles, clips, wraps, and all that jazz. The SleepBelt is an adjustable belt that can wrap around you, with no pressure on your shoulders or weight on your back, and secure in place with velcro. Within hours of my daughter’s birth, I wrapped my SleepBelt around me and placed her on my chest to nuzzle closely to her mommy.

The SleepBelt is made in Canada from a material called Nylon Supplex, which allows for a strong hold but fabric that is smooth to the touch, thus comfortable for you and your baby. Hospitals in both Canada and the United States utilize the SleepBelt, and it’s even recommended by La Leche League International in their book “Sweet Sleep: Nighttime and Naptime Strategies for the Breastfeeding Family”.

There is no sizing limit on the SleepBelt so you can use it for skin-to-skin in that essential “fourth trimester” stage, but then advance to holding forward-facing around four months or even as a seat support after six months. It is not for babywearing, as you only wear it while seated, but it serves many of the same purposes. You (or Dad!) can still cuddle with your baby hands-free while working at the computer (like so!), read a story to your other children, or even eating dinner, since if you’re anything like me, your baby rarely gets put down but a gal still needs to eat! I love the closeness that the SleepBelt offers but the opportunity to have my hands available is really nice too!

I really love our SleepBelt and I’m looking forward to using it in other ways as she grows too. How wonderful it would be if all hospitals included the SleepBelt in those take-home kits they give out. We should all be encouraged to keep up that fourth trimester snuggling for our babies!

  81. Oh wow this seems like an amazing product! My husband did a lot of skin-to-skin when our Annie was first born. He played video games while she napped on his chest and I slept LoL I would definitely look into this when we have more children as the first will be around Daddy and might make the new baby roll haha
