Father’s Day: Essential Household Workers

disc sponsored

Sometimes, I think we as a society forget how important fathers are to the family unit. Every dad is different and they don’t all speak the same love language. Some dads show their love by working hard every day to put food on the table and bring a smile to the faces of their families. Other dads make it a point to be present for bedtime every night to read a bedtime story to their little ones. No matter how they show you they care, I strongly believe that every dad is fundamental. Statistics do back up my opinion on this one!

My husband refers to us as a united front. We are a team, a family, a unit. Lincoln said “A house divided against itself cannot stand” and while he was obviously referring to the US government, I believe this to be true for our household and many others. We have five children and I absolutely cannot imagine not having him there to back up everything I say (and vice versa), make decisions with, and raise our children.

We need Daddy in my house. He is absolutely an essential worker here and without him, our home would cease to function! He works himself to the bone but he also lends his creativity to many of our household projects and he’s the first one to initiate tickle fights when he gets home.

I love having a day set aside just to celebrate dads. Father’s Day is an important one in our household and we really like to use it to show our appreciation for all of the things my husband does. I’ve heard people talk about Father’s Day being commercialized but I’ve never felt that way about Father’s Day or any of the days that honor our loved ones. I think that these days simply remind us to appreciate our wonderful fathers, stepfathers, and grandfathers!

Father’s Day isn’t about cards or gifts, and I think your own dads and husbands will tell you that. Papa Bear and Grizzly Gramps certainly draw attention to that fact on their Father’s Day fishing trip in The Berenstain Bears Father’s Day Blessings, a story that my children love for my husband to read. This book is only $3.99 and it reminds kids of so many major things:

  • Dads are special and important
  • Father’s Day should be about celebrating our fathers and grandfathers
  • Our Heavenly Father has given us so much to be thankful for

My own dad worked night shift for over a decade to make sure that we had things that he didn’t have growing up and I wish we had spent more time trying to honor him and show how much we appreciated his sacrifice all of those years. Often, I feel like dads are forgotten. Women bear the children so it is us who immediately come to mind as the nurturers but fathers play such an integral role in the raising of a child and family.

I don’t think that I truly recognized or appreciated how important fathers are until I married my husband and we brought children into the world. With the eyes of a wife and mother, I now saw how much work my dad put into our lives. I vowed to make sure that I showed my children that same perception of their dad so his efforts would not go unnoticed. Father’s Day is a day that brings me so much joy, because it brings him so much joy, but I do hope that I make the dads in my life feel special every day of their lives.

  1. It’s hard to pick just one memory of my father. He was always there. I would say him opening up Christmas gifts is my favorite though because he likes to act very excited.

  2. I remember my Dad and I walking to town hand in hand. Seemed so far when actually only about 5 blocks.

  3. My favorite memory with my dad is going to the CD store every week when I was younger to get some new tunes!

  4. my grandpa looked like santa and dressed in a santa outfit when we where little and pretended to be santa

  5. When my girls were little I used to read a bedtime story to them each night and I really miss that time now that they are grown.

  6. My favorite memory of my dad is the day we went to court and he formally adopted me as his daughter.
