Having the opportunity to review Big Bad Dad’s Homemade Jams & Jellies, I fell in love with the taste and their recommendation of creating your own tart pastries! Since I didn’t have the ready-made crust as suggested by the recipe they used, I decided to come up with something using the things I had at home and I couldn’t be happier with the result! I don’t think I’ll ever go back to store-bought pastries again!
INGREDIENTS
*(This recipe was just for a few pastries for me to share. If you want more, try multiplying the recipe!)
Crust:
1 cup flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/3 cup vegetable shortening
2 1/2 tbs cold water
Filling:
Jar of jam or jelly (I suggest Big Bad Dad’s, my new favorite! I used their amazing Blackberry Bourbon Vanilla Jam!)
Frosting:
1/2 cup powdered sugar
2 tbsp milk
Sprinkles
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 450°. Combine the flour and salt, then mix in the vegetable shortening thoroughly. Add the cold water and knead the mixture into dough.
Flatten the dough as thin as you’d like your pastry. Not too thin that everything will fall out but not too thick that it won’t bake through! Use a pizza cutter to slice rectangles for your pastry. I did a few big pastries and then mini-tarts for my kids!
Put a couple of tablespoons onto the dough. I put gobs onto mine, knowing full well that they could spill over or explode out of the top, but I wanted as much on there as possible!
Put the other rectangle on top and use a fork to seal them together. Place them on a cookie sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes.
Mix the powdered sugar and milk together to form a paste. Once the pastries have cooled, frost them and drizzle your sprinkles on them while the frosting is still wet.
ENJOY!

Oh my! We go through so many pop tarts in our house its crazy. I have never seen a recipe for one that seems fairly easy with little room for error. I can’t wait to try making these.
