review disclaimer

If you were to ask anyone who knows me, they would say that I hate history…but that’s not the case at all. I’m terrible at history, this is true, but I find it unbelievably interesting. The thing is that, in school, I had teachers standing at the front of the classroom just rattling off details of historical events and it got boring fast. Listening to some monotone voice list events like they’re just a daily food journal, how can that hold anybody’s attention? Whenever pieces of history were made interactive, those became memorable for me. History Unboxed brings your children this type of learning fun monthly!

History Unboxed is a monthly subscription box detailing different periods and events in history. Each month, your child will be excited to receive new activities that each lead them to learning about a part of history! The welcome box contains an interactive timeline, and a welcome coloring comic strip. You can choose between ages 5-9 or 10-15 and also add-on a sibling, which includes extra craft materials and sheets. Each box contains hands-on crafts, activities, art, and enrichment materials.

  • Copy of the ancient Phoenician alphabet and a gold card tablet
  • Drawstring bag, wax, and paint spray for dyed purple batik bag
  • Timeline sticker to keep up with each History Unboxed period on your Wecome Box’s timeline
  • How-to for making your own papyrus using household materials
  • Page detailing some of the facts about ancient Phoenecia.

Learning to write in Phoenician was so entertaining for the girls. The question prompts about each fact/activity were perfect. I asked them which letters looked similar to our alphabet and which were missing and everyone spoke at once, even my three year old. I calmed them down and we went over it, taking turns on the similarities and differences between our alphabet and that of ancient Phoenicia. We were instructed to write our names in Phoenician on our gold plaque and I was extremely surprised that my older girls (ages 5 and 7) did a really good job! They loved learning about other languages and we had a long discussion about it!

Personally, I was really intrigued by the fact about Phoenicians using a murex snail as dye. The girls thought that was so odd and I pondered how the process would look! As directed, we used the wax to paint a design on the white drawstring bag and after it was dry, sprayed the purple dye across it. The design showed up beautifully, the girls were thrilled! With this visual display, I know that they will remember the “purple people” Phoenicians and their snail dye.

We haven’t had a chance to make the papyrus yet but I’ve definitely put it on our list, as well as some of the cool links shared on the History Unboxed social media pages (check them out below!) History Unboxed is the most awesome history learning idea that I’ve ever heard of. To make history a box of surprises on a monthly basis makes it a fun gift and to include interactive crafts and activities makes each part easily memorable. Whether you love history, hate history, or just need to add a little kick to it, HIstory Unboxed is the learning box for you!

  1. Whaaat, this would be so perfect for my house of history nerds! The kids and I would LOVE some ancient Egyptian or Roman stuff, but we nerd out to it all so it doesn’t even matter lol. This is such a cool idea!

  2. I think a History box about the Revolutionary War period would be most fun and interesting for kids. The subscription box idea is so great. I think interactive learning is the best.

  3. the beginning of history from various viewpoints and cultures. or the history of native to america Indians.

  4. I would love to see a California Gold Rush kit or an Ancient Japan kit. There are so many possibilities!

  5. We are studying the Ancient Americans, but my children love anything Ancient Rome, Greece, or Egyptian. I feel like we will be studying the Ancients forever!

  6. my son loves any history where they talk about leaders and their accomplishments so any war or any type of power shit in history, hitler, cold war etc
