We love Crayola in my home. We’ve tried other brands but they just don’t really hold up the same, feeling greasy and flimsy. Each year, the stockings are stuffed with crayons and markers with their favorite characters on coloring books under the Christmas tree. I would say that we color and do other art more than anything else because it’s easy and a beautiful way to express your creativity. Even though our Crayola crayons do a great job of withstanding the typical wear and tear of coloring children, they do get broken. No crayon can stand the test of getting pounced on by Daddy tripping over them while giving goodnight kisses. This year we thought that instead of throwing away those broken crayons, we could find a fun way to re-purpose them!
The Crayola Crayon Factory is an electric-powered “factory” that melts down the crayons, allowing your children to recycle these great crayons into something even more fun! The mold shapes include a car, heart, and a puppy! The kids can use brand new crayons like those that are included with the factory, or squish all of those broken ones in there to make a multi-colored concoction. Turning trash into treasure and since it’s just wax, it’s safe to play with.
I can’t be the only one who has a huge zippered bag full of broken crayons that thinks the Crayola Crayon Factory is a nifty and necessary idea, right? I’d be happy even if you could just melt them back into normal crayon shapes so the fun shapes are just a bonus that I know the kids will appreciate! The factory itself is recommended for ages eight and up but with supervision, I plan to let all of the children try. We’ll make it a craft session as well as a required chore for cleaning up! Once or twice a month, we’ll take all of the broken crayons and make them new! Then we’ll color a rainbow picture for Grandma.
The Crayola Crayon Factory retails at $34.99 and I was thinking that by my calculations, we throw out at least $3 worth of crayons every month. That adds up pretty fast! I would say it’s worth it to have this tool/craft and that’s why I’ve chosen to include it on my holiday gift guide for this (or any…) year! I’m looking forward to making a pink, purple, and blue puppy!
