Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes at Franklin Institute + GIVEAWAY! Ends 7/30

We are a family of Marvel fans. We’ve seen every film at least five times (including the ones that “don’t count”) and my husband has some rather extensive comic knowledge that never fails to impress me. I’m not as familiar with all of the Marvel history but I was so excited to learn more at the Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes exhibit at the Franklin Institute.

marvel comic history

The Franklin Institute never fails to provide the best and most interesting exhibits but we knew this one would be our favorite to date and it didn’t disappoint! With more than 300 artifacts from comics to movie props and costumes, I could have spent days inside that exhibit learning more about Marvel and the history of comics.

It’s actually difficult for me to hold back on all of the things I learned in the Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes exhibit but I don’t want to give it all away so that you’ll have the same excitement when you get there! As far as comic history goes though, it was phenomenal to learn about how comics came to be, how they were received in the beginning, and especially the evolution of comics. Learning why Captain America came to be in existence actually really moved me. I love reading about how Stan Lee came to be involved in the biz. That’s all I’ll say on that because I want you to check it all out for yourself!

marvel iron man costume

It’s not all history though, there are so many awesome props from movies too. The majority of the Avengers have costumes at the exhibit in some form. Iron Man’s multiple suits, from the first one to a post-fight one to the fancy newer one. That was admittedly my favorite costume section even though Iron Man isn’t necessarily my favorite. (I can’t choose a favorite at this point!) The Black Panther costumes are stunning and meticulously made. I love seeing costumes that were beat up during filming or made to look that way. There was just so much to see!

They didn’t stop with just the Marvel movies either, the television shows were included too. So if any of you gals love Jessica Jones like I do, don’t worry, she’s in there too. Tough guy Luke Cage and the adorably sweet Agent Coulson, they’re mentioned also! This exhibit is THE exhibit to see for every Marvel fan, adult and child alike. Actually, we went without the kids so that we’d have the opportunity to really appreciate everything but I think this is the perfect way to start introducing the Marvel universe to your little ones. Let them start with all of the historical knowledge and see all of the amazing keepsakes from some of the coolest films out there!

It’s also worth mentioning that normally, I don’t pay much attention to the gift shops after an exhibit at the Franklin Institute. I’m a pin collector and aside from that, I don’t like to buy too much clutter so I usually just bypass the shops entirely. We went CRAZY at the gift shop for the Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes. First of all, they have comic books for only a dollar each like an actual comic book store would. So we bought every single comic they had so that we’d have souvenirs for the kids. We also bought a massive book about the history of Marvel. It’s made quite the addition to our shelf of nerdtastic things. The bottom line is, make sure you also check out the gift shop here to see if there are any treats or collectibles worth grabbing. If you’re cheap like me, direct your kids to the comic books and you’ll be a superhero in your own rite. Ha!
