Every child is different and I can attest to that through personal experience just raising five children of my own. My oldest is creative and thoughtful but struggles with structured learning, particularly math, due to her learning disability. My second daughter is always ahead of the curve and independent. They both learn in such different ways and I was very interested to see how they would each respond to their new Big Fat Notebooks.

What does this mean in kid language?
To paraphrase my kids’ description of Everything You Need to Ace Computer Science and Coding in One Big Fat Notebook, it’s “easier”. The kids find it relatable and tell me that it is full of examples that they can actually relate to, like kids asking their mom for stuff. They said that they liked how it was playful and funny throughout the notebook.
Both girls originally cringed when I handed them a school book and asked them to read through it and tell me what they truly thought. I basically just handed over more homework, who wants to deal with that? But I’m thrilled to say that by the end of the day, they both told me that they were wrong and it was so much better than textbooks at school.
One said that she learned a bunch of new facts and was actually sharing them with her friends. The other, the one with ADHD who really struggles to focus, spent an incredibly long time reading Everything You Need to Ace Computer Science and Coding and walked up to me with a smile on her face telling me how funny she actually found it.
Is it really everything I need?
It’s been a long time since I’ve taken computer science and coding but the way that everything is broken down in here, I’m fairly certain that is absolutely is everything you’d need! It covers programming, algorithms, even working together with others. If you visit the Workman Publishing website, you can actually flip through some of the pages. There you will see how detailed they get and the way that they make things easy to understand using metaphors and all kinds of useful tips.
What is our overall opinion of Big Fat Notebooks?
I signed on to review Big Fat Notebooks specifically because I read up on this entire collection and knew that they were exactly what my household needs, be it for independent work or the extra help. It keeps their attention, unlike some monotone text book that would put you to sleep. It’s full of information but these notebooks present it in such a way that you enjoy yourself and learn without even realizing it.
We will likely be picking up the entire Big Fat Notebook collection to continue working with the kids on every subject and not only do I recommend them, I’m going to drop a line to the schools about them too!
