The OG - Original Greek Filet Mignon Souvlaki pita

My Big Fat Greek Dinner at The OG – Original Greek

disclosure product

When we moved to deep southern New Jersey, I realized we might be picky about food. We couldn’t find any pizza we liked and it seemed difficult to find a good steak. Still, we hadn’t tried a lot of foreign food so when we saw The OG – Original Greek pop up in place of the old hoagie place in Somers Point, we didn’t really think about it. Then I came across their Instagram and my mouth watered. Maybe Greek food was for me.

I’m incredibly thrilled that we decided to give it a try. The OG may have hosted our first visit but we’ve been back on our own four times since and it’s become our go-to place to eat out. Let me share a little insight as to why…

The OG - Original Greek loukoumoades

The first time we went to The OG, I ordered a filet mignon souvlaki pita and my husband got the rotisserie beef and lamb gyro. My filet was cooked absolutely to perfection and stuffed inside this soft pita was the most tasty sauce ever: tzatziki. The OG puts a few seasoned french fries in their pita, along with onions and tomatoes. My pita was completely packed with substance and flavor, very filling. For dessert, we had the Loukoumades, which is like a fried dough and looks like donut holes, with Nutella and cookie butter. My husband and I agreed that for that flavor and full bellies, the price was incredibly reasonable.

Since that first visit, we’ve returned to try many different things from the menu. Their salads are big and hearty, we had the Greek salad with chicken souvlaki as well as the village salad. The OG Burger was perfection, a Pat LaFrieda 100% Black Angus burger, with a side of homemade potato chips. The chicken tenders are crispy and juicy but I also LOVE the Wingcraft sauces. I’ve yet to try an OG dish I didn’t love, actually.

As far as The OG itself, it’s small and intimate with only glass between you and the chef so you get to watch their artwork as they create your meal. I could really tell that our chef, Tom, cared about the preparation and appearance of the dish. (As it turns out, he’s been a sous-chef for some very prestigious places and it shows!) I thought it was really the perfect spot for a date night between the atmosphere and affordable pricing. Dates normally cost us $100 but The OG is less than half of that for us, and that’s even if my husband gets two entrees on a particularly hungry day.

You can also bring your own alcohol if that’s something you prefer. The group at the table behind us shared a bottle of wine and chatted a while, suggesting it could be a decent spot for a night out with friends or associates too! If you’re not in the mood for dining out but you still want good food without having to cook, you can also place an order for takeout or even delivery. The OG – Original Greek is our new go to spot. We used to turn to one another and ask, “Do you want to eat out?” but now we just ask, “OG?”

The OG – Original Greek is located in the ShopRite plaza at 17 Bethel Road in Somers Point. For more information, visit ogoriginalgreek.com
