My tiny seven year old is the quietest thing but when she loves something, you can see her whole face light up. I showed her our new book, Unlimited Squirrels: Who is the Mystery Reader? and she grabbed it from me with a big smile on her face. Who is the Mystery Reader? is the second book in the Unlimited Squirrels series by Mo Willems. You may be familiar with Mo Willems as he is a number one New York Times best-selling author and illustrator and he’s been awarded the Caldecott Honor three times so far. Needless to say, I knew this author knew how to capture the attention of my kids!
In Who is the Mystery Reader?, Zoom Squirrel tries out a new superpower with the help of a mystery reader. Honestly, I’ve never seen my daughter’s attention held for a book more than this one. I don’t know how else to describe it but BOUNCY. You roll through the narrative adventures one by one but everything is broken up with jokes, quizzes, facts, and all kinds of fun.
When my daughter came upon the first joke, she belted out a huge laugh and said, “I LOVE the jokes! Listen to this one, Mommy…” I asked her what her favorite part of the book was, assuming she would say the jokes, but she actually assured me that she loved the whole thing and couldn’t possibly choose just one part. When I told her that she had to share the book with her six year old brother, she was mad at me and gripped it tightly!
Unlimited Squirrels: Who is the Mystery Reader? is actually recommended for ages 6-8 and my seven year old blew through it but my six year old is a newer reader so we took our time. Just about every word in the book is relatively easy to sound out so my son and I have been having fun using it to practice his reading. It’s so much more entertaining than early reader books and he’s proud to be able to read it.
I haven’t read the first Unlimited Squirrels book but we loved this one so much that I’m definitely picking it up just to see the kids’ excitement. We all recommend Who is the Mystery Reader? for your peppy, squirrely readers!
