I’m Thankful For My Sense of Humor

I like to spend the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving devoting entire posts to people, places, and things that I am deeply and seriously thankful for. Since today’s SITS Back to Blogging challenge asks me to list ten things I’m thankful for, I’ve decided to talk about the thankful things I don’t always think about. My mom, my kids, those are “duh” answers, I’m going for the less thanked things!

  • The ability to Google lyrics. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve mumbled lyrics to a song because I have no idea what they’re saying. Or I’ll insist I like a song based on its instrumental aspects but actually have not a clue what the song is actually about.
  • Texting. There are very few people I’ll take calls from because I don’t have hours to spend on the phone and it seems like getting off of the phone is the most difficult thing there is. “Oh wait, by the way..” “I really have to go but really quick…” You get stuck in an endless loop of discussion when really, you only called me to ask me what size the kids wear. I love that I can text simple questions and then it’s over. Or I can text when I’m somewhere really quiet instead of being the rude lady practically shouting (I am a very loud person, by the way!) into her phone on the subway. Texting is a life saver and it barely makes sense to me how people ever lived without it!
  • Instagram filters. Thanks to Instagram filters, I can roll out of bed in the morning and look like a supermodel to the few people that are left following me after my incessant selfie taking. It saves me a lot of money in makeup.

I was wearing no makeup and cleaning my house but I thought the filters helped give me a cute selfie.

  • My DVR. I was able to run out and grab the tasty hoagie (sub, grinder, sandwich, whatever you call it!) I’d been craving for dinner last night and play back the season premieres of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away With Murder at my own leisure!
  • Dollar store mustaches. I have never had more fun with anything in my entire life for less than a dollar. Seriously.

  • Pinterest. Finally a place where people can put all of these great ideas for me to steal, re-create in all of my mediocrity, and pass off as my own for full credit. There has never been a better way to have everybody think I’m the most creative and skilled supermom they have ever met! And it’s fun!
  • GrooveBook. Because otherwise, the only purpose of my pictures would be to fill up your Facebook and Instagram feeds but never really end up anywhere. Now, I can have them all printed out in cute little books and frequently repeat, “I’m going to scrapbook with them soon!” every couple of weeks.
  • Yard sale groups on Facebook. Have you joined a local one of these yet? If you haven’t yet, you should. I have saved so much money on gifts, toys, furniture, clothing, accessories, you name it. Junk that usually just sat by my front door waiting for us to take it to be donated can now be sold and the cash can be used for more clothes for our ever-growing monsters or the occasional dinner at a steakhouse. It’s a fantastic way to make money off of terrible gifts you got, too. I’m not really sure why someone thought buying you a wooden tie for Christmas was a good idea but thankfully, there will be somebody in there who thinks it’s the coolest idea ever! They might whittle down your price or insist you meet them in the middle of the night at a place a half hour out of your convenience area, but they will make you some money!
  • Expensive chocolates. For some reason, I can look at a beautiful cashmere sweater and then run screaming when I see the price, insisting that there is no way any article of clothing is worth my first born child. Meanwhile, I will take out a second mortgage on my house to pay for the cart full of expensive but exquisite chocolates.
  • The sink. Oh yeah, you use it every day but do you ever stop to think how thankful you are for it? In our old place, our landlord once took a whole week (maybe even two!) to get our sink fixed and we couldn’t use it. I like my tepid glasses of tap water and more importantly, I love not to have to do dishes in my bathtub.

  1. Isn’t is true how the littlest things are what we are truly thankful for. I hear you about the sink. One day my garbage disposal broke and I to was stuck washing dishes in the bathtub, no fun!
